manhole placement

I'm looking for an EIA TIA standard for the max distance between manholes. I do not have a copy with me nor do I have any TOs at this location. We are trying to get an Army contractor to do an install that we are not equipped to do. You can contact me via e-mail at benjamin.reid@kdab.centaf.af.mil.

Thanks

Hello Benjamin,

The EIA/TIA outside plant standard is 758A , Customer-Owned Outside Plant Telecommunications Cabling Standard, 05-May-2004. The recommended maximum spacing of manholes and hand holes is 600-feet. This same information is can also be found in the BICSI Customer-Owned Outside Plant Manual, Edition 3. If I remember right, the Air Force T.O. for outside plant design was 31W3-10-22.

I hope this helps. When dealing with contractor installations, also insure no more then two 90-degree (or a maximum total of 180-degrees) conduit bends are installed between the manholes and handholes and building entrances. Contractors tend to want to place a lot of bends and turns in conduits.

Hello,

Our friend has more than covered the topic for you. BUT, no turns between manholes. Turns are done in the manholes so that the pulling line does not cut the brand new duct in half, porviding for water entry into your manhole system. If there will be a bend for facility entry, it should be done in a steel duct section at the buildings footer or in a handhole.
