Blue hard hats

Remember when you couldn't wait to ditch the yellow hard hat for a blue one? Those were the days.

I was in the old Comm Const, GEEIA, E & I Squadrons and Comm Groups. No hardhats in 20 years as a lineman, installer and splicer in the Air Force. Then I went to work for Ma Bell 20 years and they made me wear one to the point where it was a part of me, I took it with me when I retired.

We were just talking about this before the holidays - you know, 'The Old Days'-thing. Were the colored hard hats an AF thing or just EI?

I remember going from yellow (trainee) to blue (team member, 7 level) and finally got a terracotta color when I first became an EI Team Chief. I can't even remember when the colors lost their relevance (early 90's?)

To make matters more interesting, I believe for awhile we had green for safety monitors, we had white for basic visitors and though we didn't feel they needed hard hats (cuz maybe an accident would happen - just kidding) QA had this weird gray color.

In a way it was pretty cool - on those REALLY big EI jobs of old, one could look around the cluster of a big project and eyeball specific individuals by their hard hat.

Markel, out...

Now hell, that's funny. Remember when I couldnt wait to get that ugly ass terra cota hardhat. When I was last with the 738th in the 90's, they went to the Yellow (team member) and White (team chief) color set. Still have my white hardhat, keep it in my truck and still use that thing on job sites. Just can't let go of my past I guess.

It seems I remember Delaney and I doing some pretty awful things to that raggedy brown bucket of yours... I'm sure it was his idea though. For some odd reason I've still got a blue, white and brown one in my garage--chin straps and all!

I remember wondering what was up with the terracotta hard hats? Why terracotta? Just always wondered that. System of a Down put it in perspective for me though, catchy tune, Terracotta pie, terracotta pie, terracotta pie HEY! SOAD is cool as hell. Going through mid life crisis here, music has to be loud and angry, even Atreyu and Killswitch Engage ringtones on my phone. HAHAHA!
