2E6X3 Job - New Recruit Questions

I am leaving for basic in two weeks, and I was offered the job of 2E6X3 (Telephone Systems?) They didn't tell me much about it. Can anyone on here tell me anything about it? And if I will likely be assigned stateside for this job? Also, How long is training for this job?

McPherson,
Being a Wire Dawg is a great job!! It would be even better if it weren't for the customers!! (that's a joke -- sometimes). Anyway, my troop tells me the training is about 9 months. If at all possible, go overseas for your first assignment. I've known too many Airmen that got stationed 1-2 hours away from mommy and daddy and they never cut the umbilical cord. Even if you get out after your 4-6 year enlistment, that's enough time to be stationed 3 different places, do some traveling and see a lot of places you may never see again. The bigger bases overseas (Germany, Japan etc.) will give you a chance to learn a lot of different phones and key systems. You should be given an oppurtunity during basic to fill out a 'Dream Sheet'. It's a list of places that you would like to be stationed. A lot of stateside bases are contracted out to the civilian sector and a couple others are what's known as Combat Communications and I wouldn't suggest those(personal opinion--make your own decisions pup). The training we recieve provides us with a lot of choices when we enter back into the civilian world. Hopefully this helps a little. If you got anymore questions, you can hit me up at slogdawg@yahoo. If not, good luck to you and maybe I'll see you down the road. Peace -n- chicken grease. Slog.

Does anyone have any information on Combat Comm Squadrons and what they do? I am really interested, the name sounds like something I would be interested in.

BTW I leave for MEPS monday, basic on tuesday, 2E6X2 Cable/Antenna Comm Systems.

I don't believe they have 2E6X2 resources in Combat Comm. Mostly 2E6X3's running mobile field equipment.

Is this still true active duty people?

Good day,

This is a great thing that you are going into the USAF as a 2E6X3. Any 2E is a great choice because of the skills you will learn. This will help you greatly when you decide to leave the military and persue a civilian career.

The 2E6X3 school is some where aroun 4-6 months.

After tech school you will either be sent to a base comm squadron or a combat comm squadron.

On the base comm side your duties will be to take care of the base telephone voice and data networks. These skills will help you greatly in the future if you decide to get out of the military and look for civilian employment.

On the combat comm side you will be dealing more with deploying with a package of equipment where you go to a location and set up this equipment to provide telephone and data services in a temporary manner. Once the base has more permanent services the the combat comm people leave.

I suggest base comm first because you need the basic telecommunications skills to be a good wire dawg.

Good luck in all you do.
If you have any questions just shoot me an e-mail.

Wire Dawgs,

I cannot speak for the 3rd Herd at Tinker, but the 5th MOB at Robins does not have Cable Dawgs. I also concur with CBurgDawg. Base Comm first, then Combat Comm later down the road if you want a little change. My opinion is that in a 3-5 years, there will only be Combat Comm stateside (possibly a small handful of fixed Comm bases), but if you want to work in fixed Comm then you will most likely have to be overseas.
The theory is correct that once the Base Comm is in place the Combat Comm leaves, but the 5th MOB is on a constant rotation to BIAP(Baghdad International Airport)/Sather AB. We have a fixed base Comm infrastructure here, but about 85% of the squadron maintaining the base is from Robins. It's comically nicknamed 5th MOB East. Don't let the Combat portion of our name fool you. You may be deployed a little more often, but it's highly doubtful that you will be under fire or face to face with the 'enemy', so to speak.
Good luck Pups and welcome to the Kennel!!! Wire by Choice, Dawg for Life!!!!! You can talk about us, but you can't talk without us!!!

I'm a 2E6X2 as well, but you took the thread off track from a 2E6X3 question to another subject. Rightfully, I should have mentioned that before instead of commenting on it. I think you opened another thread where that question might have been more appropriate at http://www.wiredawg.net/forum/topic-1501.html

oh yea when it comes to stateside its possible but honestly its where ever they need you(like every job in the military) i am sationed in japan....its a good experience (seriously) but if u put in for all stateside you kind of have a good chance but either way u can swap assignments (not gauranteed that people would swap but u just might get lucky) and i think they are gettin rid of Electronic Principles in Keesler which is 2 months and 4 or 5 months in texas. its worth it seriously cus if u do get out of the military u can make BANK out in the civilian world also its a good trade.
