Me. I have this Masochistic need to freeze to death is sub zero weather digging holes, splicing frozen cables and breaking back-hoe teeth off of buckets, go figure. (grin)
They have a few job openings for splicers and helpers, not sure yet what the pay will be, the job listing says $11 - $32 an hour depending on experience. I have the experience, granted 20yrs ago and I'm hoping they just might be desperate enough to hire a chick. Never know until you try.
I had hoped to come in contact with someone that is currently in the cable shop up there, or has been recently to give me a heads up on the work environment and the people.
Thanks for your reply,
Betty

The base "cable shop" there is all Civilians. The Military cable dawgs up there are HICS guys. They are working on HICS cables and such. I do know that the HICS shop just converted a few HICS military slots to Civilian. Also, if it is the HICS guys, they no longer fall under the Communications AFI. They fall under the Missile Maintenance AFI's and rules. Good luck! I am glad to be out of HICS now. The past 4 months have been great being back into base comm.

I am actually in the HICS shop in Minot right now and Cable Affairs is "next door" to us. Cable Affairs has 3 positions, 2 that are filled by civilians and a 3rd that, i believe, needs to be filled by at least a Tech. As of right now we have 2 civilians and a 3rd on the way, so I am not sure of the availibility of a possible 4th civilian spot, but us 2e6x2's are getting replaced, so there may be a chance.

Anything more specificly that you would like to know, then let me know and I'll try to fill you in as best as I can.

Hey there, I'm from the HICs shop up at Minot. I'm deployed out right now. I've been there just over a couple of years. I say it a nice place to be... nothing fancy or wonderful about it. If you don't mind living in a fairly quiet place. Before I left I was one of the main feild runner guy. If you want to know more on what we do out in the field for HICs you can hit me up, if your thinking about Cable Affairs, I have some info about them. I've done so work with those guys from time to time. Basicly we are all dawgs and like to have fun.... work hard play hard type of deal. Just let me know if you want to know anything about minot.... and the guy Tibby he's a good guy... I guess.

Playin Tibbs.... Papa Shima will be home in a few months

Well pack up you warm clothes and don't expect alot of snow.

Shima,
Thank you!! They haven't posted a job yet for cable affairs up there, but that's the spot I want. Who do I have to charm / schmooze?
(grin) If I can only get into the splicing position, do the guys work in teams? (I'm 5ft tall, I don't have the upper arm strength you guys do, but I make up for it with quick wit, an amazing knack for common sense, and I am administratively inclined, I'll also bust my tail doing the work I am physically able to handle.) Are there heaters? I had splice a 100pr in Germany once by candle light during a blizzard. I swore I wouldn't do that again! (grin)
Fill me in.

I haven't been there since 1967. In the winter, we just kept the pressure up on the cable with nitrogen tanks until the BIG THAW! You can't dig in the winter, the freeze line is about 36-48 inches. I had a blast up there...just don't ever want to go back!
