3DXXX career fields

So how are the upcoming communications Air Force specialty code conversions going to affect the wire community? They're talking about converting from 16 communication AFSCs to 11 "cyberspace support specialties" by October.

Well the reorg is killing off the "Wire Dawg"!!! If you are fortunate enough to get the X2 slot you will still be able to work in the switch but if you get the X1 slot you will be a glorified want to be CSA that once in a great while gets to label a telephone for a complaining customer....

I would like to chime in and say that once a Wiredawg always a Wiredawg and noone can take that away, not even the 3D career field. I was a Wiredawg for 24 and half years and still one. I work with other Wiredawgs. Having been an instructor for seven years at Sheppard AFB I am a big advocate for education. I recommend being diversified in your knowledge so you will be prepared for the civilian world.

I have been working Qwest now for 12 years and they are still cable, IM (instalers) and COTs (inside plant). There was talk of creating super techs, but it never happen due training costs. It is great to get all the knowledge but if where is the actual expierence telcos want going to come from if you haven't ever worked in switch room or repaired a cable trouble.
